Helmzier
Those images had to be clearly recognizable from afar and it had to be easy to distinguish one from the other. To make this possible they used emblematic and/or figurative rather large illustrations and few distinctive strong colours. For the ground coat on metallic surface they would use silver or gold and for the more decorative and more detailed parts colours like silver, gold, a strong blue, red, black and green. The art of painting and arranging the images would be subject to heraldry.
The shield with the corresponding illustration and the helmet (a so called tilt helm) with the crest would form the coat of arms which would then stand for a knight's family, a dynasty, a gender.
